JACOB JENSEN DESIGN

Renowned Danish design studio Jacob Jensen has created the Shade design exclusively for Bruynzeel Storage Systems. Shade features the same minimalist colour palette and iconic lines as the studio’s groundbreaking work for Bang & Olufsen, Jabra and General Electric. The Shade design can be specified across Bruynzeel’s range of static archive shelving and mobile shelving. In the mini-documentary below Timothy Jacob Jensen, son of the founder and current CEO of Jacob Jensen studio, presents his vision of contemporary design.

JACOB JENSEN DESIGN AGENCY

Jacob Jensen Design is one of the oldest design firms in the world. The company was founded 55 years ago by Jacob Jensen. Meanwhile, the second generation of the company has acquired the firm.

AESTHETICS VERSUS FUNCTIONALITY

When talking about design, first impressions last. The old saying that form follows function is not incorrect – it’s just not enough any more. A well designed product, says Timothy, must have added value.

WHERE DO YOU GET INSPIRATION?

Inspiration can come from anywhere – the people you meet people, the natural world, the music you hear, the food you taste. You can draw inspiration from all of these things. According to Timothy, we are all born with the capacity to be creative – and inspiration is the key to unlocking our potential.

SHADE DESIGN PROCESS

Shade for Bruynzeel was the first time Jacob Jensen had been asked to design a storage system. With over fifty years of experience, however, each design the studio creates follows a specific set of steps, which starts with some simple sketches on paper and ideas development. Here, Timothy explains the Jacob Jensen approach to fulfilling a design brief.

WHAT DOES A PERFECT DESIGN LOOK LIKE?

A ideal design solution is something magical. Design is not art, although it shares many characteristics with art. So when it came to designing a storage system, Timothy’s vision was for a product that ‘disappeared’ when not in use.

CORPORATE VALUES IN OFFICE DESIGN

Businesses want to express different things though the their offices, often linked to corporate values. This has an impact on interior design. Taking Jacob Jensen Studios in Shanghai and Denmark as a starting point, Timothy explains how good office design can help any business get the best out of its workforce.

FUTURE OF WORKPLACES

Office space and design will talk more to the individual in the future. Treat your employees well by considering their needs when you area designing your office, says Timothy, and you will retain your competitive edge.

WELCOME TO THE OFFICE

We should not forget we are a kind of animal when we are organising our working space, says Timothy. He is up early every morning to start a fire, light candles and put coffee on in the Jacob Jensen studio, satisfying our basic urge to be cosy together. Employees who later come in not only feel welcome, but also feel that the company respects them.

FORM AND FUNCTION FOR STORAGE

Office space and design will talk more to the individual in the future. Treat your employees well by considering their needs when you area designing your office, says Timothy, and you will retain your competitive edge.

THE PHILOSOPHY OF JACOB JENSEN

In Jacob Jensen’s design studio the aim is to the essence of an object, or a product. The important thing, says Timothy, is that everything is in balance and nothing gets the upper hand. He also explains the relevance of colour and line in creating his vision of simplicity.

MAKING YOUR NAME AS A DESIGNER

‘You are never better than your last fight.’ You cannot survive on reputation alone, says Timothy, only on the quality of your work.
